You must be familiar with the old adage ‘An apple a day keeps the doctor away’.
New research shows this to be a scientific fact rather than simply a myth, especially if the doctor in question is intent on prescribing statins to lower your risk of heart disease.
That’s because researchers at the University of Oxford say eating one apple every day matches the vascular benefits of modern statin drugs - without any of the harmful side effects.
In a recent study, they constructed a theoretical model of the effects of prescribing either a statin drug or a daily apple to all adults in the UK who were over 50 years old.
They say that consuming an apple a day would prevent or delay around 8,500 vascular deaths from heart attacks and strokes every year in the UK. Those projected results were slightly lower but very similar to the consequences of prescribing statins, which were estimated to reduce vascular deaths by 9,400 in people over 50 years.
But it’s when you factor in the side effects of statins that apples emerge the big winner. Over 300 health problems have already been linked to statins, including myopathy, rhabdomyolysis (rapid breakdown of muscle tissue) and type 2 diabetes caused by statins.
As you can guess, there is literally no downside to eating an apple a day.
The American Heart Association (AHA) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) recently released new guidelines on preventing cardiovascular disease by better assessing risk and by managing cholesterol, lifestyle and weight.
Unfortunately, their new guidelines will qualify a whopping 44% of men and 22% of women for statin therapy, thereby ensuring even bigger profits to the drug industry.
Statin therapy is based on the misguided belief that lowering cholesterol lowers risk of heart disease. Believe it or not, roughly half the people dying from a heart attack or stroke have low to normal cholesterol levels!
On the other hand, a previous study has shown that eating one apple every day for just four weeks can lower levels of oxidized LDL (bad) cholesterol by 40% in healthy, middle-aged people.
Similarly, a Dutch study of over 20,000 people showed that eating lots of apples and other white fleshed fruit lowers the risk of stroke by 52%. Each 25 gram daily increase in white fruits and vegetable consumption was associated with a 9% lower risk of stroke.
Fact - an average apple weighs 120 grams. No wonder apples are considered one of the world's most healing superfoods!
