Health Quiz: Do you suffer from job stress?

by Nancy Maneely

Studies have shown that job stress clearly is the No. 1 source of stress for American adults, and that it has increased over the past few decades. A sure-fire indicator that you’re suffering from excessive job stress: the feeling of having little control but lots of demands.

Excessive and prolonged job stress has been linked to increased rates of heart attack, high blood pressure, depression, insomnia, immune disorders and other maladies. In New York, Los Angeles and other major cities, the relationship between job stress and heart attacks is so well acknowledged, any police officer who suffers a coronary event – whether on or off the job – is assumed to have a work-related injury and is compensated accordingly (including a heart attack sustained while relaxing at the beach on vacation).
