Oral health care tips from a holistic dentist

by Nancy Maneely

Oral Health Care Tips Holistic dentistry has been making inroads into mainstream America in recent years, especially with the growing knowledge about the toxins contained in common dental fillings and the connection between proper oral hygiene and whole-body health.

Holistic dentists are committed to oral health care as it relates to the entire person. They accomplish this through minimally invasive treatments and natural components wherever possible, emphasizing the importance of controlling the growth of decay-causing bacteria in the mouth. Many specialize in the removal of mercury amalgam fillings and replacement with safer materials.

Interested in finding a holistic dental practitioner in your town? The Holistic Dental Association (see below) has a directory on its website.

Holistic dentist Reid Winick, who practices in Manhattan, prescribes this daily oral hygiene regimen to his patients:

  1. Brush twice a day at a 45-degree angle, using a soft-bristle brush.
  2. Choose a toothpaste free of fluoride and sodium lauryl sulfate.
  3. Eat alkaline foods such as beans, fruits and greens to help maintain a good body pH.
  4. Rinse mouth with warm sea-salt water and a few drops of clove or mint oil instead of mouthwash.
  5. Clean gums with an oral irrigator instead of dental floss, which can contain harmful chemicals.
  6. Get plenty of sleep and exercise daily to ward off whole-body inflammation.
