Arginine, or L-Arginine, is a chemical “building block” known as an amino acid. It is made in the body but is also found in foods such as red meat, poultry, fish and dairy. It can also be taken as a nutritional health supplement.
When taken as a nutritional supplement, L-Arginine helps with many conditions such as migraine and other conditions that involve inflammation. It relaxes blood vessels, and therefore might have cardiovascular benefits for some people. Studies show that it might ease the symptoms of angina and peripheral arterial disease. Some studies have shown an immune-boosting effect and that it can help wounds heal faster.
L-Arginine is being studied as a treatment for other conditions including dementia, hypertension, cancer, male infertility, diabetes and obesity. So far, the results are inconclusive. More research is called for in these areas.
On the negative side, L-Arginine does not seem to help with heart attack recovery, preeclampsia, or exercise tolerance in people with heart failure. It seems to worsen asthma.
As a nutritional supplement, L-Arginine is considered “possibly safe” for most people when taken as directed by mouth, short-term. It can cause some side effects such as abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, gout, blood abnormalities, allergies, airway inflammation, worsening of asthma, and low blood pressure.
