The first symptoms of deficiency may include leg cramps, foot pain or muscle 'twitches' along with loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and fatigue. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, seizures, abnormal heart rhythms and heart spasms can occur.
Other symptoms include constipation, urinary spasms, menstrual cramps, difficulty swallowing or a lump in the throat, photophobia and loud noise sensitivity. Insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity, restlessness and panic attacks are also common signs of magnesium deficiency.
Magnesium is needed by every cell in our body, including our brain cells, for hundreds of enzyme systems and functions related to cell metabolism, protein synthesis and fat and carbohydrate utilization.
Like water, we need to consume magnesium every day. Our bodies have a constant need for magnesium - and when we get enough magnesium in our diet, both life and health are enhanced.
