You’re probably familiar with monosodium glutamate - also known as MSG, a very common additive in your food.
Now, shocking new research has uncovered that this ‘flavor enhancer’ is very toxic for human health and can cause a wide range of adverse health effects within normal dietary ranges.
In fact, a new study reveals that a single intake of MSG produces headache in the majority of healthy subjects tested.
Study researchers conducted a double-blinded, placebo-controlled, crossover study to examine the effect of repeated MSG intake on spontaneous pain, mechanical sensitivity of the muscles you use to chew your food, blood pressure (BP) and many other side effects.
Fourteen healthy subjects participated in 5 daily sessions for one week of MSG intake or placebo. Spontaneous pain, pressure pain thresholds and other variables were measured 15, 30, and 50 min after MSG intake. Whole saliva samples were taken before and 30 min after MSG intake to assess glutamate concentrations.
Overall, 8 out of 14 subjects experienced a headache after MSG, relative to 2 out of 14 during placebo. Pain in chewing muscles was increased by MSG, especially on the 2nd and 5th days. BP was significantly elevated after MSG.
Not only that - various side effects became apparent on repeated MSG intake, including sore jaw, nausea, fatigue, stomach ache, dizziness and many more.
Many packaged and prepared foods available on the market today have either monosodium glutamate added, or a glutamate rich 'food concentrate' that is intended to imitate its flavor-enhancing effects such as ‘hydrolyzed soy protein’, ‘yeast extract’ and so on.
It is therefore nearly impossible to avoid it unless you are eating a whole food based diet or prepare your foods from scratch.
