Learn more about natural health solutions for sinusitis. From what to add to your diet to nutritional health supplements.
The paranasal sinuses are air cavities around your nose and facial bones. When the sinuses are healthy, you may hardly be aware of them. But if they get infected with viruses or bacteria or irritated by allergens, they can become a painful, uncomfortable, profound nuisance! What we’re talking about here is sinusitis, also known as inflammation of the sinuses.
Sinusitis not only makes breathing difficult, but is painful in a way that can seem completely impervious common over-the-counter pain relievers. The pain is often exacerbated by a feeling of strong pressure in the face, like it’s being squeezed in a vice. In short, sinusitis can make you utterly miserable.
When it comes to sinusitis, prevention is key. So what can you do to treat sinusitis naturally? Over-the-counter allergy medicines can be very helpful, but if you want to avoid drugs, here are some suggestions.
- Eat lots of foods that contain quercetin. Quercetin is a naturally-occurring bioflavinoid found in many fruits and vegetables, such as citrus fruits, grapes and dark berries like blueberries, onions, leafy greens and parsley. It is also available as a natural dietary supplement in health food stores. Quercetin works by stabilizing mast cells and preventing them from releasing histamines, the chemicals that cause allergic reactions.
- Get a Querctin nutritional supplement. Many different brands of Quercetin can be found in health food stores and in many different forms and formulas.
- Use a Neti pot. A Neti pot is a nasal rinsing tool that looks like a tiny teapot. You fill it with warm water and non-iodized salt (or saline solution purchased from a drug or health food store) and use it to rinse your sinuses. It can take a few attempts to figure out how to use it, but the relief is worth every second. Neti pots can be purchased at most any drug or health food store for a reasonable price.
