Three Simple Supplements for Acid Reflux

by Health News

Acid reflux is an unpleasant condition suffered by millions of Americans. It is caused when gastric fluid regurgitates back up into the esophagus and causes a burning sensation known as heartburn.

Common causes of acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), are the presence of a hiatal hernia, being overweight or lying down shortly after eating. Eating certain foods can also cause acid reflux, such as carbonated drinks, citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, garlic, spicy or fatty foods.

Some natural remedies to effectively reduce the risk of acid reflux include licorice root powder, DL-methionine and betaine.

Prevent acid reflux naturally

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) has shown to be a very effective cure in clinical trials for acid reflux. This natural ingredient is a good alternative to medications such as Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium. DGL has been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. Most importantly, choose the deglycyrrhizinated form to avoid the problems of hypertension and water retention caused by licorice root in its natural form.

Licorice root works by promoting the formation of mucus to line the stomach, soothing the spasms of the digestive tract that may cause acid reflux. As a guideline use one to three 400 mg tablets of DGL according to your weight and the severity of the symptoms.

Betaine Hydrochloride (HCL) is naturally present in the stomach so taking a supplement is a natural way to solve acid reflux problems. HCL is the primary digestive stomach acid produced by the body to break down proteins in the stomach as part of the digestive process. It is powerful and kills harmful micro-organisms in the food to protect the body and it counters acid in foods, creating hydrogen ions as a byproduct and neutralizing the food before it enters the colon.

Supplements of betaine HCL with pepsin can cause burning, so always take at the start of the meal to avoid stomach burning. If one 540 mg capsule fails to be effective, the dose can be gradually increased up to three capsules per main meal.

DL-Methionine is an amino acid found naturally in meat, fish and dairy products. It is commonly used in acetaminophen poisoning but can also be effective in treating acid reflux. It should be used with care as it has some serious side effects if not taken correctly, and it may cause a reaction if you are on other medications.

There are safe supplement available in formulas that work in conjunction with other natural ingredients to treat acid reflux safely and effectively.
